My name is Lena Coakley and I love children's books. People often ask me why, and then I find myself fumbling around for an answer. It's not that I don't know. It's just that people don't realize what a deeply personal question that is. Usually I say that I have never been able to sink so completely into a book as I did when I was ten years old. Honking big cheque for Canadians
- I just got my Access Copyright cheque today and I thought that there might be some Canadians out there who might not know about Access Copyright and PLR. The repetoire payment really was significant this year--bigger than a lot of my royalty statements.
Access Copyright: Basically, in Canada authors and other creators are reimbursed by schools, libraries and other organizations when they photocopy our work. You are paid if they have informed Access Copyright if they've copied a specific book of yours, but you also get a portion of a general "repetoire payment" even if no one claims to have copied your work. It's free to register. If you haven't, go here: http://www.accesscopyright.ca/
PLR: The Public Lending Right Commission tracks the use of books in libraries and gives you money if your book appears in libraries they survey. For them you can only register between Feb 15 and May 1st. It's also free to register. http://www.plr-dpp.ca/
